Live Action, Cliff House San Francisco, 34:00, 2022
This piece takes place at the Cliff House, a historic building located on a rocky cliff above the north end of Ocean Beach in San Francisco.
Enclosing the Cliff House with a grey chalk line:
Using two headlamps—one facing forward, one back—and a small convex mirror in my left hand to see behind me, I draw a grey chalk line while crawling backwards around the perimeter of the building. I film the hand mirror with a wireless camera I have taped to my forearm which feeds to a live video projection. Once the chalk line is closed, I walk down the steps to a square platform.
Feedback loop vortex:
A drummer faces the wall, away from the audience and into a large convex mirror. She turns on her headlamp and loudly plays the drums for 5 minutes while I watch her reflection through the hand-held convex mirror. When she finishes, I break the small mirror, then walk in front of the drummer and break the large mirror. With the help of a few assistants, we immediately carry her drum kit up the stairs and put them in the back of her truck.
